Periods of Activity: Betsy Medvedovsky. Anti-book

Here I used “deconstruction” quite literally to take apart a book -- and my life -- into its constituent ingredients. (In general, deconstructing a genre/format usually suggests the reordering and restructuring that can happen.)

Periods of Activity is an unbound auto-biography in the style of a dossier on me. Photographs from my life are collected into a folder on which significant dates are printed. The loose pages can be ordered and re-ordered, hinting at the self-construction that an auto-biography actually is.

Like any book, this is a physical object which works best when seen in person, especially because of the loose pages which can be rearranged. However, here is one view of Periods of Activity, seen in spreads. Below it are photos of the book.
